BHP Medical Clinic Balan, Haiti

We're raising funds to cover the increased monthly operating costs of the BHP Medical Clinic in Balan, Haiti. The family medicine clinic offers quality health care to a village without affordable, local options. Run and staffed by a team of Haitian professionals.

Join or Support a Mission Team

One way Brown Horse Projects works to achieve our mission is by coordinating several mission trips annually that focus on medical care, health education, arts enrichment and relationship-building.

Map of United States w/ distance points to Haiti/Dominican Republic

Friends, the need is great. Just a 4-hour flight from Miami will take you to the island of Hispaniola, home to some of the most beautiful, hard-working, humble, kind and tenacious people. Despite desperate circumstances in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, our neighbors persevere, cling to the hope of the Gospel, and teach us time and time again, as we work together, to do the same.

In Haiti:

  • The GDP per capita is $2,800.

  • Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, 59% of the population lives under the national poverty line.

  • There is widespread unemployment, an estimated 15% of the labor force is seeking employment.

  • There is a widespread lack of access to food. Due to high food prices, natural disasters, sociopolitical turmoil, and worsening insecurity, over 1/2 of the population faces acute food insecurity and are in need of urgent food assistance.

  • 10.7% of children under the age of 5 are underweight.

  • Life expectancy among women is 67 years and men 64 years, compared to 83/78 years respectively in the US.

  • Physician density is 0.29 physicians per 1,000 population (2022), compared to 3.68 in the US.

  • More than 50% of the country is without electricity.

  • Haiti is in desperate need of an updated telecommunication network.

  • Haiti has had no President since the assassination of Jovenel Moise in 2021.

In the Dominican Republic:

  • Unauthorized migration and smuggling from impoverished and unstable Haiti has led to occasional border tensions and increased security by the Dominican Republic, including the construction of a fence and the deployment of military troops. Immigrants from Haiti living in the DR are often treated poorly.

  • 23% of the DR population lives under the national poverty line.

  • Life expectancy among women is 74 years and men 71 years, compared to 83/78 years respectively in the US.

  • Physician density is 2.43 physicians per 1,000 population (2023), compared to 3.68 in the US.

Called to Serve Mission Trip Scholarship Fund

At Brown Horse Projects, we believe that when God calls someone to serve, finances should never be the thing that keeps them home. John and Joyce Albrecht, longtime supporters of Brown Horse Projects, passionate believers in the power of missions, and fellow horse lovers (which obviously makes them exceptionally cool) have generously established the Called to Serve Mission Trip Scholarship Fund. This fund was created to help remove financial barriers for those who feel called to serve on a Brown Horse Projects mission trip.

Whether you’re a student, working adult, retiree, or simply someone who has a heart to serve but limited financial means, this fund exists to help make participation possible. Mission trips can be life-changing—not only for the communities we serve, but for those who go. John and Joyce wanted to ensure that cost would never be the deciding factor for someone willing to answer that call. If you feel called to serve with Brown Horse Projects, but finances are standing in the way, we encourage you to apply.
